Various log home manufacturers offer different styles, but as a general practice, two rows of sealing materials like butyl tape, foam tape, and caulking are typically applied on top of each log before placing and securing the next log on top.
Over time, these interior sealants can degrade, leading to drafts or increased heating bills. When homeowners begin to notice such issues, it's advisable to inspect and caulk the exterior joints of the home as needed. Based on our experience, around 90% of air and moisture intrusion occurs around windows and door trim, followed by corners, and lastly, the horizontal joints between logs.

What Is the Difference Between Log Cabin Chinking and Caulking?
Caulking and chinking are two different techniques used to seal the gaps between logs or boards of a log home. Both methods involve filling in any gaps, but they differ in terms of materials and application process.
Caulking
Caulking, typically used in gaps less than ¾” wide, serves a crucial role in maintaining structural integrity. Specifically designed caulks, such as those tailored for logs, possess impressive elasticity, stretching up to 500%. This elasticity is vital as it allows the caulking to accommodate the daily expansion and contraction of logs caused by temperature changes—warming and expanding during the day and cooling and contracting at night.
To enhance the durability of your caulking, it's essential to include a step like installing a backer rod, which is a closed-cell foam dowel placed behind the caulking. This additional measure helps to support the caulking and improve its overall longevity.
Chinking
Chinking serves as the material used to seal the gaps between logs, which are usually 2 inches to 6 inches wide. Throughout history, people have employed various substances, ranging from moss to mortar, to seal these gaps. Nowadays, we commonly find mortar used in older historic homes or newer acrylic products in modern constructions.
For chinking, we often recommend using Acrylic Chinking brands like Permachink or Sashco’s Log Jam. These products resemble caulk but contain aggregates. They offer a mortar-style appearance while providing enhanced durability and longevity.
A crucial aspect of using Acrylic Chinking is the incorporation of a bond break behind the chinking. This setup ensures that the chinking adheres to the top and bottom wooden surfaces while allowing it to slide along the rear surface as it expands and contracts. Numerous materials can serve as effective bond breaks, including grip strips, backer rods, log gap caps, closed-cell styrofoam, sill seal, masking tape, and others. Careful attention to the thickness of the backer material is necessary to achieve the desired exterior profile and moisture shedding properties.
It's worth noting that Chinking is often applied in either a flat or tapered profile, depending on the specific requirements of the project.
Why Is Caulking and Chinking Important?
Caulking and chinking are essential for maintaining the structural integrity of your log home. They help prevent water infiltration, insect infestations, and air leaks, all of which can cause damage over time.
- Water Infiltration: Logs naturally expand and contract due to changes in temperature and humidity. This movement creates gaps between the logs that allow water to seep in, leading to rotting and decay.

We recommend addressing any checks in the logs 3/8” or larger by installing backer rod and then caulking. Additionally a check should be filled if it is on the upper curvature of the log where significant water will accumulate, such a a void or log imperfection.
Why shouldn’t we caulk smaller checks?
We have seen that over time with the natural expansion and contraction of your logs, the caulk will get pushed out of the crack and then you will have a lip where water can be funneled down into the check, behind the caulk and get trapped, and cause log rot.
