- Overhangs: We recommend overhangs because the more water you keep off of your logs the longer your protection system will last.
- Transparent products: Only apply transparent products on your logs or larger timbers. These products tend to trap moisture and they make it harder to detect discoloration in the early stages of rot.
- Good Ventilation: We recommend a minimum of 2 ft air gap between exterior logs and shrubbery however four (4) ft is ideal
- Proper maintenance: Regularly inspect the exterior of your log or timber home for signs of damage or decay and address any issues promptly.
- Effective drainage: Put roofs over Exterior home appliances/accessories such as AC Condensers, Propane Tanks, Mini-splits to prevent rain from splashing onto you logs.
- Landscaping: Have soft Landscaping to prevent splash.
- Cobra rods: Install cobra rods in areas with a high probability of repeated moisture to help prevent Rot. Cobra rods dissolve when wet and product moves with the moisture not allowing the logs to rot. Not a permanent fix but helps longevity of high moisture areas. A common place for cobra rods is in the bottom 1-2 rows of logs along a concrete sidewalk within a few feet of your logs.
- Sealing and staining: Apply a quality sealant and stain to the exterior wood surfaces every few years to create a protective barrier against moisture and UV rays.
- Prompt repairs: Address any leaks or damage to the roof, windows, or doors immediately to prevent water infiltration into the wood.
What are the Effects of Log Rot?
Log Rot usually does NOT effect structural integrity of the entire structure for a very long time say 10 years. Log Cabins are very forgiving as the exterior walls are essentially solid and load bearing. It can take a long time for log rot to become a structural issue. Most log rot does not penetrate past 2-3” before it tends to spread out horizontally with the grain of the wood, and most logs are 6-8” thick.

We then caulk the perimeter of the new refaced log to seal it.
